7 Signs It May Be Time to Consider In-Home Care
- Difficulty with Daily Tasks: When meal prep, laundry, or taking medications become overwhelming, professional care can restore balance and safety.
- Changes in Personal Hygiene: Neglecting grooming or wearing the same clothes repeatedly may signal fatigue, memory issues, or limited mobility.
- Frequent Falls or Safety Concerns: If you’ve noticed small accidents or bruises, it’s time to consider ways to prevent injury and increase stability at home.
- Forgetfulness or Missed Appointments: In-home caregivers can assist with reminders, medication management, and transportation to keep life running smoothly.
- Loneliness and Withdrawal: Isolation is one of the biggest risks for older adults. Companion care offers the social connection that’s essential for emotional well-being.
- Changes in Eating Habits or Weight: Skipping meals or relying on convenience food can be a sign your loved one needs help with nutrition and groceries.
- Caregiver Stress in the Family: If you or another family member are feeling exhausted or stretched too thin, bringing in support can benefit everyone.

Family-Selected Caregiver Options
In many cases, families want the person providing care to be someone their loved one already knows and trusts. We understand this and have developed our Family Selected Caregiver program, allowing individuals to hire and train a family member or friend as their paid caregiver.
Advantage may coordinate with one of the in-home support programs across Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee that allow clients to receive care from trusted family or household members, subject to each state’s eligibility rules.
Missouri’s Consumer Directed Services (CDS) program allows the client (“Consumer”) to direct their own care and hire the caregiver of their choice, including most family members, friends, or household members. Certain relatives—such as a spouse or legal guardian—are restricted.
Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee (Agency-Directed Programs). Across all three states, we also operate agency-directed home care programs, where Advantage is the employer of record. Many of these programs allow certain family members or household members to be hired as the caregiver when they meet program requirements. Each state has its own rules defining which relatives may serve, what tasks they may perform, and whether additional oversight or restrictions apply.
Overall, our service lines support a care model that keeps individuals safely at home by allowing clients to receive assistance from people they already know and trust—while ensuring compliance with all state-specific caregiver qualification and supervision requirements.
Here are some of the programs in each state:
- Missouri’s Consumer-Directed Services (CDS).
- Tennessee’s CHOICES Consumer Direction program under TennCare.
- Illinois’ Community Care Program (CCP) and Home Services Program (HSP), both of which offer self-directed care options.
These programs empower families to stay involved while ensuring care remains professional, reliable, and fully supported by Advantage Home Care.
